The notion that ageing is an inevitable part of life has been questioned in recent years, as researchers and visionaries dare to imagine a world where we view ageing not as an unavoidable fate, but as a conquerable foe.

This paradigm shift is not as novel as you might think. Throughout history, our ancestors have been captivated by the pursuit of the elusive Fountain of Youth. From the quests of explorers searching for magical waters to tales of alchemists unlocking the secrets of everlasting vitality, these timeless narratives reflect a deep-rooted desire to overcome the limitations imposed by ageing.

Today, armed with the latest scientific advancements, we stand at the precipice of a revolution that challenges the very concept of ageing itself. In the field of longevity, the objective is not to live forever, but to understand and target the underlying mechanisms that drive ageing, such as cellular and genetic deterioration. By leveraging research and innovation, the goal is to discover interventions that can postpone, or even prevent, the frailty, disease, and disability typically associated with old age, extending the period of good health and vitality.

In essence, we strive to live youthful lives for as long as possible. By acknowledging ageing as a treatable condition rather than an inescapable fate, we ignite a fire of possibility that promises to reshape the way we live.

Last month’s Longevity Med Summit, hosted in Portugal, served as a collaborative platform for scientists, clinicians, entrepreneurs, and investors to discuss the ever-evolving field of geroscience. I attended as a health researcher, and here are the top five things I learnt.

1. The longevity sector is expanding rapidly

The field of longevity is booming. Projections indicate that by 2025, the pursuit of curing ageing and extending lifespan will become a market worth at least $600 billion, a sign of the significant interest and investment flowing into the field.

Back in 2013, a set of Hallmarks of Ageing was introduced. Think of them as the characteristics that define the ageing process. They have given scientists a roadmap to develop tools and treatments for promoting longevity. As our understanding deepened through a decade of research, three additional hallmarks were added earlier this year, demonstrating the dynamic nature of the field.

With a growing number of individuals seeking to dodge age-related decline and prolong their youthfulness, the scientific and commercial advancements in longevity are accelerating quickly.

2. Longevity is the convergence of biology and technology

Longevity research sits at the dynamic intersection of biology and technology. Through the convergence of classical computational methods, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, both the investigation of ageing and the development of solutions are being revolutionised.

One of the key tools is omics data analysis, which allows researchers to capture and analyse vast amounts of biological information. From the intricate workings of genes to functional protein interactions within complex networks, it offers a comprehensive understanding of the molecular landscape driving longevity.

With extended vitality and improved healthspan, our world could undergo a remarkable transformation. In the future, households may integrate biosensing wearables and compact devices to optimise health, providing personalised meal suggestions and pre-emptively detecting issues like falls, infections, and disease. AI-assisted doctors could remotely consult, coordinate assistance, or deliver medication to your doorstep. The possibilities are reminiscent of an almost sci-fi future that may not be so distant.

3. The ageing process can be measured, and reversed?

Instead of measuring your age solely by the number of years you have lived, scientists are measuring biological markers that reflect how our cells, tissues, and organs actually age.

Ageing clocks can use any biological system that changes as we get older: the epigenetic landscape, telomere length, the glycome. By measuring the level of variation within these systems, scientists can gain insights into how far someone’s biology has deviated from its youthful function, essentially how much damage has accumulated. In some cases, they can even indicate proximity to mortality.

Using these clocks to predict biological age can give individuals a more meaningful understanding of their health status and future trajectory, and can help inform targeted lifestyle interventions.

Entrepreneur Bryan Johnson is leading the ambitious Project Blueprint, investing millions of dollars to optimise his health, slow his ageing, and even reverse it. Through strict dietary and exercise protocols, Johnson has slowed his ageing pace to 0.69, as measured by the DunedinPACE epigenetic clock. That means for every 365 days that elapse, he ages around 252.

Compound that reduced rate over 30 years. While chronologically he would be 75, his slower biological ageing would make him roughly 10 years younger, and that estimate does not even account for future advancements.

There are some more exciting interventions on the horizon. Epigenetic reprogramming, stem cell transplants, and nanobots for precision drug delivery are all forms of cellular rejuvenation therapy with the power to reboot our biology and turn back the clock. A little more research is needed before humans can truly start to age in reverse.

4. Longevity asks for an overhaul of healthcare

Currently, there is an estimated 10-year gap between healthspan and lifespan, meaning individuals endure age-related disease and disability for an extended period. Despite increased healthcare spending, chronic diseases, strongly linked to ageing, are more prevalent than ever.

Medical advancements have been effective at keeping us alive for longer, but they have contributed very little to prolonging healthspan, vitality, and overall quality of life.

It is time to escape the stagnant, unsustainable sick-care model that focuses primarily on silencing symptoms and managing disease. This reactive paradigm fuels biological decay and turns a blind eye to the prevention of frailty, disease, and disability that haunt our twilight years.

5. There is no magic bullet

The process of ageing is intricate and multifaceted. Longevity will not be attained through a single solution; it requires a holistic, comprehensive approach. A multiple-shots-on-target strategy, manipulating several ageing pathways at once, is crucial for optimal results.

The current toolkit encompasses repurposed drugs like metformin and rapamycin, supplements like NAD+ and resveratrol, microbiome-targeted therapies, and specific vitamin and mineral regimens, complemented by tools such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, infrared saunas, and cold plunges. Their effectiveness relies on synergistic integration with essential lifestyle factors.

In reality, combatting the ageing process is hard work. It requires consistent effort and dedication on a daily basis. Practices such as calorie restriction, moderating animal protein, avoiding simple and processed carbohydrates, increasing physical activity, and embracing a life outside the thermoneutral zone can activate pathways of longevity and vitality rapidly, and at no extra cost.

The mind-body connection plays a profound role too. Research shows that maintaining a positive outlook on ageing can extend lifespan by 7.5 years compared with those who feel negatively about growing old. Our thoughts and beliefs hold immense power over our physical wellbeing.
